Hundreds flock to beach walk [PHOTOS]

The event attracted more than 400 visitors and 200 dogs.

AN amazing assortment of dogs and their owners enjoyed a fun-filled day out on one of eThekweni’s finest beaches on Youth Day, Tuesday, 16 June.

Whatever the breed, from magnificent Great Danes, a highly pedigreed Dogue de Bordeaux to a tiny long-haired Chihuahua and many pavement specials, the inaugural My Sapphire CommUnity beach walk was a resounding success for dogs and people.

The beach walk, spearheaded by the newly-formed My Sapphire CommUnity, is set to become an annual fixture each Youth Day. Supported by Amanzimtoti SPCA and Winklespruit Surf Lifesaving Club, the free entry event attracted more than 400 visitors and 200 dogs.

Volunteers from all three organisations as well as sponsors ET Security, Mike Signs, Archiprint, and Happy Drums worked together to provide a wonderful day out for locals and visitors.

Generous donations of pet food as well as cash was a wonderful boost to Toti SPCA’s constant fundraising drive. The SPCA as well as Fireworks Action Campaign Toti were on hand with information on responsible dog ownership on the beaches.

Toti Conservancy assisted with beach patrols and provided information on dune rehabilitation and conservation projects that they manage.

The My Sapphire CommUnity logo features the words: ‘We’re in this together. Let’s make it happen.’ The invitation is out there to all organisations and individuals – if you have an idea for an event, or would like to contribute in any way, big or small, make contact via the My Sapphire CommUnity Facebook page, or email mysapphirecommunity@gmail.com.
