First sards of season netted

There is hope that with the cold front dropping water temperatures along the coast, this could be the year.

The first sardines of the season have put in an appearance on the South Coast, according to the Sun’s sister newspaper, the South Coast Herald.

On Thursday morning, 4 June it reported netting had taken place in the Margate and Uvongo area with some activity off Southport.

The KZN Sharks Board’s sardine hotline was not very enthusiastic of any sightings this week, with its first report of the season on 2 June.

“Waters are quiet and the water condition is too warm,” it said. “We should have a better idea in the next week or two or after our next recon flight on Tuesday, 9 June. Some sardines, with pilchards and red-eye were spotted in Port Edward last week.”

There is hope that with the cold front dropping water temperatures along the coast, this could be the year the little silver fish make an appearance.
