eThekwini celebrates Africa Day

Activities will kick-off with Africa Day celebrations on Saturday, 23 May.

WITH Africa Day being commemorated on Monday, 25 May, eThekwini Municipality and the provincial government will embark on various activities to engage and educate the community on what it means to be African.

Activities will kick-off with Africa Day celebrations at People’s Park East on Saturday, 23 May.

The day will begin with a colourful parade at 9am from the city hall and move towards People’s Park East.

On site, representatives from various African countries will showcase their cuisines at the Taste of Africa exhibition stands. There will also be a fashion show with African garments.

On Sunday, 24 May, there will be a multi-denominational church service at 1pm at the city hall, where different congregations will come together to worship and pray for Africa to be a truly united continent.

On Wednesday, 27 May at 6pm, a seminar titled, ‘Being Afrikan’ will be hosted at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. The aim is to create a platform for robust dialogue on how African people should live together as neighbours, citizens, and as members of the global community.

Members of the panel will include Prof Somadoda Fikeni a political analyst; Dr Mathole Motshekga an expert on African heritage and a member of the National Assembly and Ashantiwa Archer-Ngidi, CEO of the Afrikology Institute.

For this year’s Africa Month celebrations, the theme adopted by the Africa Union (AU) is ‘Women Empowerment and Development towards Agenda 2063’. In keeping with this theme, South Africa has identified key strategies that will propel the country towards continental unity, development, economic growth and social cohesion.
