Discard e-waste correctly

THE Upper South Coast branch of the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa’s (Wessa) mission is to promote public participation in caring for the earth.

This week it focuses on electronic waste (e-waste). Electronic waste is a collective name for discarded electronic devices. It includes television sets, computers, cellphones, desk lamps, power tools as well as fridges. What do you do with your old equipment? It is so often found dumped and in time, it releases toxic substances contributing to air, water and soil pollution.

So if equipment is still in good condition, think about donating it. If it is only good enough for recycling purposes, there is a container in the parking area of Makro, supplied by a specialist e-waste recycler, which accepts a range of e-waste, but not everything. In

When purchasing new fridges or other appliances, ask the dealer if they’ll remove your old item and enquire how they dispose of these ‘whites’. Alternatively there is a drop-off point at the Pavilion Shopping Centre.
