Police swoop on stolen cigarettes

Cigarettes worth R50,000 seized from Doonside shop.

POLICE confiscated counterfeit cigarettes to the value of about R50,000 from a shop in Doonside on Monday, 11 May.

“Members of Crime Intelligence and Toti crime prevention received information on the sale of illegal cigarettes.

The information was followed-up, and at about 3pm an arrest was affected and the cigarettes were confiscated,” said Toti SAPS communications officer, Capt Charlene van der Spuy.

“On further inspection it was discovered that the cigarettes are not from South Africa and do not have the SA Diamond stamp, which makes them illegal. The suspect was charged under the Customs Excise Act on illegal cigarettes and appeared in Toti Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 12 May.
