Train carriages set alight

The blaze was brought under control by fire fighters from the eThekwini fire department.

Train carriages were set alight at Reunion station, near Isipingo on Wednesday evening, 6 May after a train broke down in between Umlazi and Reunion stations.

According to media liaison officer of Emergency Medical Services, Robert McKenzie a passenger train was set on fire, near the Reunion train station. “As many as 11 coaches were alight,” he said.

“Nobody was injured in the incident and KZN Emergency Medical Services paramedics were on standby at the scene.

The blaze was brought under control by fire fighters from the eThekwini fire department.”

According to media reports, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) estimates the damage at about R2-million.

It is suspected that angry commuters set it alight after it broke down.

“We can confirm an incident that occurred on Wednesday, 6 May at about 6pm where a train was allegedly set alight at Isipingo railway in Rana Road,” said Major Thulani Zwane of the SAPS KZN media centre.

“The motive for the incident is unknown. Isipingo police are investigating a case of malicious damage to property and no arrest has been made at this stage.”
