Stun grenade, guns seized by police

Police find five men en route to rob a house.

FIVE men armed with guns and a stun grenade en route to rob a home in Scottburgh were arrested by Brighton Beach cluster officers after a high speed chase on Friday, 10 April.

On Friday night, the Brighton Beach cluster anti-hijacking and house robbery task team were told about five men planning a house robbery at an unknown location in Scottburgh. With a description of the make and colour of the car, the officers and a Port Shepstone K9 unit member set up a waylay operation on the main road into the area.

More than two hours later, Sergeant Jooste saw the car take the Scottburgh off-ramp, heading towards Dududu and the officers followed. When the would-be thieves noticed the police cars they tried to speed away. During the high speed chase, Sgt Jooste forced them off the road and the men were quickly pulled from the car.

During a search of the men and car, police found two unlicensed firearms, ammunition, balaclavas, gloves, cable ties and a stun grenade. According to the Brighton Beach SAPS cluster communications office, these items fit the modes operandi of several house robberies in Amanzimtoti, Isipingo, Folweni and Park Rynie.

Two guns were found during the arrest.

The men were charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and an explosive device. The men, who were from Umlazi, appeared in Scottburgh court on Monday, 13 April, where police opposed bail.

Police are looking into other possible crimes the men may have committed and the guns will be sent for forensic analysis.

Brighton Beach cluster commander, Brigadier James Sayer commended Sgt Jooste, Constables Nene and Pule and the Port Shepstone K9 unit members for their team work that led to the arrests and recovery of the unlicensed firearms and explosive device.
