Nile monitor freed in three-hour rescue

A trapped Nile monitor was rescued after a three-hour operation in Prospecton.

A THREE-HOUR rescue in Prospecton led to the safe release of a Nile monitor on Monday, 6 April, thanks to Bluffite, Shaun Venter and other volunteers.

Venter arrived in Prospecton at about 7.30am after he was called out by a local factory manager. The monitor was found stuck in a pipe and was digging itself further in as rescuers attempted to approach.

With the tail of the distressed lizard sticking out of the pipe, the decision was made to break the pipe ahead of it and block its path to ensure it didn’t move further in. After hours of chipping away at the pipe, Venter and his crew were able to extricate the monitor.

After being checked, the monitor was released into the wild in a safe area. “It was such an amazing feeling. It is a wonderful creature and to be able to save its life is fantastic,” said Venter.
