Win boosts school’s water-saving efforts

Pupil's drawing will be reproduced into a poster.

A WINNING entry in the Woolworths Thirsty for Action competition from grade 5 pupil, Adhika Apparam of Gokul Primary School in Isipingo will see the school receive a new, fully-installed 10,000 litre water tank to boost its water-saving efforts.

This is the sixth year that Woolworths and MySchool invited primary schools participating in the Woolworths educational programme to communicate about the importance of water conservation in their schools and communities.

Pupils were asked to present water-saving tips in the form of a drawing that details what they can put into action at school or at home. Adhika’s drawing will be designed and reproduced into posters that will be distributed to schools in the region.

The programme reaches schools across KZN, Eastern Cape, Gauteng and Western Cape and a winner from each province is selected.

The ‘Thirsty For Action’ competition provides schools with an exciting and purposeful event that they can use to raise awareness of water as a scarce resource during March, when both South Africa’s National Water Week and the United Nations World Water Day take place.

“It’s a natural step to help South African school communities by sharing expertise and encouraging awareness of the importance of conserving water in our water-scarce country,” said general manager of Loyalty and MySchool, Pieter Twine.
