CCPO night patrols disperse criminals

Several arrests were made.

THE last week has been a busy one for the Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) with some varying success during the civic-funded crime fighting team’s night patrols.

On Tuesday, 17 March at about 3.30am, two people were seen walking with bags of clothing along the N2 highway. As their explanation was not satisfactory, they were taken along with the property suspected to be stolen to Toti SAPS.

In a second incident on Wednesday, 18 March at about 9.30pm, CCPO guards found a man pushing a child’s mountain bike near the Sun offices in Main Road, Doonside. As they were not satisfied with his explanation, they took him to the premises where he claimed he was given the bike. The bike owner confirmed the man as her gardener, but that she had not given him the bike. The owner did not wish to lay charges, instead fired him.

On the same day at about 3.30am, guards noticed men carrying a plasma TV, near the top of Adams Road,Toti. When they saw the CCPO,they dropped the TV and ran into bushes nearby making their escape. The TV was handed in at Toti SAPS.

On Monday, 23 March at about 4am, men were seen carrying a plasma TV near the top of Almond Road. The CCPO guards gave chase and they dropped the TV and escaped by jumping over a boundary wall in Knoll Place. The TV was handed in at Toti police station.

On Tuesday, 24 March at about 5.30am, a CCPO vehicle patrol vehicle noticed a man walking in Camelsfoot Drive in Doonheights. On noticing the vehicle, he dropped an umbrella and a black leather hat before escaping.

In the early hours of Wednesday, 25 March, the CCPO’s Leon Joone was patrolling Ocean View Drive in Athlone Park when he noticed two men jumping over a boundary wall. “I gave chase, tackle and arrested one of them. They had entered a house by forcing open a kitchen door. Goods to the value of about R15,000 had been removed, ready to be taken away,” said Joone.

“It’s obvious the hard work that the CCPO is putting in is paying off and we appeal to residents who can afford to pay the monthly contribution to join us in our fight against continuous and rampant crime. The CCPO is a registered non-profit organisation and we rely on the community for assistance to be able to try and fight this scourge effectively,” said a CCPO spokesman.
