Polluted water leads to lagoon fish kill

We are fighting an ongoing battle with all types of water pollution.

There has been another major fish kill in Amanzimtoti River and lagoon following pollution into the waterways.

Toti environmentalist, Jen Adams investigated and took photos of scores of dead fish in Toti Lagoon on Monday morning, 23 March and brought the incident to the attention of Toti Conservancy.

There were also reports of dead fish in the river close to Amanzimtoti Civic Centre.

“At the time there were 11 pelicans and at least 20 woolly-necked storks in the water at the lagoon, but thankfully I did not see any eating the dead fish, which had probably died from some unknown pollution,” said Jen.

We are fighting an ongoing battle with all types of water pollution coming past the Bird Sanctuary and feeding into Toti lagoon. Let’s hope something is done to protect our environment, because this is just totally unacceptable. Something has to change to improve the situation.

While we know there are some who work tirelessly to try and help, sadly it’s just not enough.

The pollution we experience virtually on a daily basis through the bird park and into Toti Lagoon has a huge impact on the environment.”

Chairman of Toti Conservancy, Laura Taylor was quick to react, informing eThekwini Municipality officials who went to investigate.

The Sun was informed by a reliable source that subsequent tests revealed it was possibly not sewage that caused the fish kill, but rather chemical pollution coming down the canal from Amanzimtoti Bird Sanctuary. However, this could not be confirmed by eThekwini Municipality, as it failed to respond to the Sun’s queries at the time of going to print.
