Food tunnel provided to people in need

The aim of the partnership is to create sustainable ways to allow local gardeners to provide food for themselves and the community.

IN an on-going partnership between the South Durban Basin (SDB) Area Based Management (ABM) office and Talisman Hire Durban South, another food tunnel was provided to people in need on Wednesday, 18 February.

This food tunnel in Lamontville was the fourth of out of five that will be built in the SDB as promised by Ernest Jonk, Talisman Hire director. It was built and erected by the Amanzimtoti Community Upliftment Project (Amcup) along Rivera Road.

SDB ABM manager, Eurakha Singh said the aim of the partnership is to create sustainable ways to allow local gardeners to provide food for themselves and the community.

Amcup members were on hand to teach community volunteers how to plant, feed, and maintain the tunnels, of which spinach and cabbage form the bulk of the crop. The volunteers, who have excitedly taken to the project, have dubbed the tunnel the Rivera Fresh Produce Garden.

Ward 69 councillor, Brandon Pillay, said he is ecstatic his ward was selected for the food tunnel and has committed his oversight and support of the project.
