Vagrants invade vacant CBD buildings

Police services conducted a site visit

ON receiving complaints from the public about vagrants invading empty buildings in the Toti CBD, ward 97 councillor Andre Beetge initiated a site visit with Metro Police and Toti police on Tuesday morning, 10 March.

“Two weeks ago, I received calls from concerned residents. They had seen mattresses in the buildings. I contacted Toti police and crime prevention action was initiated.”

At the site visit, Metro officers from the South Region and Toti SAPS inspected the old KFC and Wimpy buildings. “The buildings smelled of drugs and faeces. Items lying around also indicated people were living there.”

Recommendations were made which include Metro Police identifying a member to liaise with various municipal departments such as electricity health and building inspectorate. It was also recommended the owners of the buildings be identified and be held accountable.
