Revamped Winkle clinic set to re-open

Various upgrades and extensions were carried out.

EXTENSIVE renovations to the Kingsburgh (Winklespruit) Primary Healthcare Clinic will be completed within the next week, according to Ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge.

“The renovations were commissioned by the eThekwini Health Department following our own and several others’ observations regarding the clinic’s ageing infrastructure and an apparent lack of maintenance.”

It was originally commissioned to start on 2 April with completion scheduled for 31 October, 2014. “However, budgetary restraints following insistence that alternative facilities be identified to continue serving people as opposed to merely referring them to either Illovo or Amanzimtoti, initially hampered the start of construction. The facility was handed to the contractor on 2 June, 2014 and then only following delivery of temporary clinic structures along Mayors Mews.”

In addition to a total upgrade which included extensive roof repairs, the staff lounge, staff lockers and parking were extended and new HIV/TB wing, emergency room, duty room, waste room, sluice room, observation room, two additional consulting rooms, additional male toilet, two additional female toilets, a paraplegic toilet and guard house were added.

Upgrades and extensions were done to the dental clinic and pharmacy and a ramp installed to facilitate wheelchair access.

Contractors will be afforded a 30 day window to complete outside work and to attend possible internal enquiries after the clinic opens to the public.

The clinic is expected to be open to the public by next week.
