Hoodlums charity raft race a resounding success

The beneficiary is Khanya Hospice.

HOODLUMS Motorcycle Club hosted a successful charity raft race in aid of Khanya Hospice at Umkomaas Ski-Boat Club on Saturday, 28 February

“The day was really great and the weather was fantastic. There was a crowd throughout the day. People, friends and families came from far and near with gazebos, set-up their braais and chilled while watching the race on the Umkomaas River. The children enjoyed the waterslides and there was plenty to eat and drink,” said Khanya Hospice chairman, Neil McDonald.
Hospice chairman and local MP, Narend Singh was also present.

“Twenty rafts took to the river and it was fun to watch the participants falling off, trying to get back on quickly and competing to be the winners. There were a large number of members from Christian bikers clubs from Durban, Westville, Bluff and Toti.”

The funds raised will support Hospice’s work in the area, from Umbogintwini to Mtwalume, nearly a 100km stretch of coastline and 40km inland.
“We don’t have top of the range offices or ivory palaces to work from. We have a few admin staff, as we have to employ qualified nursing sisters and caregivers, as we need ‘hands’ to do the work.

We also need reliable vehicles to transport the nurses to the homes of our patients, some in rural areas. Our next biggest expense is fuel and every time the fuel price goes up, it affects our budget.”
Hospice offers free palliative nursing care to people with life-threatening diseases and support to their families. It is not government-funded and the organisation has to fundraise.

“We thank Hoodlums Motorcycle Club who arranged this charity raft Race to support Hospice. A big thank you to club president Anton, his wife Vanessa and their team of helpers for a great day at Umkomaas River.
