Voice NPO needs aid to help families

We receive no assistance from local government and rely on donations from businesses and the public.

A Toti non-profit organisation (NPO) appeals to the community for donations to support two impoverished Bhekuwandle families.

Prince Ntshanagase started the Voice Community Organisation three years ago when he moved to Toti from Pretoria after suffering a stroke.

“I saw a need in the community and together with six other volunteers, we help 45 families of about 400 people in the Bhekuwandle, Umgababa and Umbumbulu areas,” said the NPO chairman.

Three times a week the Voice distributes bread to needy families. “We can go through the equivalent of about 300 loaves a day.
We receive food donations from Woolworths, Checkers, Pick n Pay and Amanzimtoti Community Upliftment Project (AMCUP).

We receive no assistance from local government and rely on donations from businesses and the public,” said Prince.

The Voice has recently undertaken to assist a family of six in Bhekuwandle and it appeals to the public for help.

The Benson family of father, Attie, mother, Tersia, uncle, Johannes Miles, Lukas (21), Emma (19) and Attie junior (17) live in a single room, for which they pay R650 a month, including electricity, but they only have a single bulb and one-plate stove for power.

The room’s roof leaks and the family sleeps on bare mattresses on the floor.

Attie works odd jobs, but no-one else is employed at present.

The family has been living in Bhekulwandle for two months after moving from Umbilo.

“We urgently need better accommodation for this family, at least a two-bedroom abode, plus a fridge, beds, bedding, curtains, clothes and food,” said Prince. “It would also help if we could find part-time jobs for the boys.”

Further up the road lives the Mthembu family of 20 people, including 10 young children and three adults, none of whom are employed.

“They live in two mud huts, which leak whenever it rains, so the little children are always sick.

Little three-year-old Samukisile is disabled with her right foot not fully developed and she has only recently learned to walk.
“This is a crime against humanity to see people living in such conditions,” said an emotional Prince.
