Man’s hand slashed in scuffle with burglar

Tenants are in discussions with the body corporate to up security measures.

Tenants in a complex are gatvol of being soft targets for criminals.
The latest crime victim is 26-year-old Henco Lidderd, who was stabbed in the hand during a scuffle with an intruder in his third floor Highlands Court flat on Thursday morning, 19 February.
“My fiance Lydia Wileman woke up at about 1am when my five-year-old daughter slammed our bedroom door, and saw an intruder in our flat,” said Henco, who then confronted the man.
A scuffle broke out, with Henco forcing the man back to the kitchen, from where he had gained entry.
The robber’s accomplice came to assist and stabbed Henco in his left hand.
“I then backed off and both of them fled.”
It is believed the pair tampered with a bottom floor neighbour’s door, before entering Henco’s flat.
He received 13 stitches in his hand and had to be booked off work. Fortunately, no tendons were severed and he is expected to make a full recovery.
“This is the fifth time in recent months we have had a break-in in the complex. This is the second break-in at our flat. The first time they stole a cellphone and wallet.
Last year they cleaned out our neighbour’s flat after smashing in her front door.
In the next block they climbed up the drain pipes.
The first block of our complex is fenced in. In the three years I’ve been living here, nothing has been done to secure the other blocks.
My daughter is too scared to go to the toilet on her own. We are all traumatised by this and are still battling to get over it.”
Tenants are in discussions with the body corporate to up security measures.
“We are in the process of putting up palisade fencing in front of the block,” said body corporate chairman, Charmaine Henn.
