Be vigilant to avoid falling victim to hijackers

Do not try to be a hero.

With hijackings and armed robberies on the increase in the Toti area, Toti SAPS urge residents to be vigilant at all times.

Recently a man was robbed of a substantial amount of money he withdrew after he was followed home from the bank. A number of armed robberies also took place in the banking court of a local shopping mall.

“Try to avoid withdrawing large sums of cash,” said Toti SAPS communication officer, Captain Charlene van der Spuy.

Whichever your destination, always be aware of your surroundings, she advised.

“Take note if you are being followed, especially on your way home. If you think you are, rather drive past your place of residence and straight to the nearest police station or public place where there is a lot of activity like a 24-hour garage.

In the event that you become a victim, try by all means to stay calm and adhere to what the suspects demand. Do not try to be a hero – that will only agitate the suspects and might result in negative consequences.

Remember, your life is worth more than any material property you might own.”
