Sewer blockage causes wash-away

A waste water team responded quickly and correctly identified the problem as being a burst pipe on the main sewage line.

A main sewer line had be diverted after a blockage in Mayville Terrace caused a wash-away of the embankment along Kingsway on Tuesday, 17 February.
According to ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge, a new manhole is being installed and work is expected to be completed by Saturday 20 February.
Motorists are urged to use caution along Kingsway.
“Local resident and businessman, Steven van den Berg alerted us to what he believed to be a massive water leak in Kingsway below Mayville Terrace,” said Cllr Beetge.
“In following up, we reported a blocked sewage line to the engineering department.
A waste water team responded quickly and correctly identified the problem as being a burst pipe on the main sewage line.
As sewage was finding its way into the stormwater system and river, we also alerted the roads and stormwater, and health departments and representatives were on site within 30 minutes.”
Contractors started working on the problem soon afterwards and through the night, starting up again on Wednesday morning, as the gradient of the embankment requires manual labour.
“We urge residents not to wait for someone else to report a problem – over-reporting is much better than under-reporting,” said Cllr Beetge.
