Successful first phase revamp at cat sanctuary

The revamp continues and donations of timber, nails, shade cloth and wire mesh are needed.

THE first phase of a successful clean-up operation was carried out at Purr-fect Rescued Cats sanctuary in Athlone Park on Sunday, 25 January.

“About 20 people got stuck in. We cleaned out dilapidated kennels, wood, rubble, even an old canopy. All together we removed four flatbed bakkie loads to the Seadoone Road dumpsite,” said Jacqueline Smith of 4 Paws and a Tale Rescue.
The animal welfare organisation is paying it forward by helping Purr-fect Rescued Cats run by Linda Weldon-Church.

“Words cannot express how I am feeling. So many wonderful people, some complete strangers until Sunday, all with a purpose in mind, to help revamp Purr-Fect Rescued Cats for all my beloved animals. It already looks so much better, thanks to everyone and especially Jacqueline Smith for making my dream a reality, 4 Paws and a Tale Rescue’s Nicky and Johnny Koekemoer, Shaun Callaghan and the Army Saints, and Virginia Sedge, Susanna Hermina Wise and Sue and Sam Bradley for the food, and Linda Roberts for dropping off extra much-needed juice, ice and black bags. I am so blessed,” said Linda.

Unfortunately, since the start of the revamp, Linda has also been inundated with calls and messages from people to take in their cats.
“I am not in a position to take on any more cats, my sanctuary is full and I rely on donations to feed all the rescued cats I have. I suggest that people with cat-related problems contact cats-of-durban@googlegroups.com or go to www.catsofdurban.wordpress.com.”

It costs a lot to feed the cats in her care. She uses 4kg of dry food and four tins of pilchards a day, which she mixes with pets mince, some bone meal and rice. On a monthly basis, she uses 60kg of pets mince and bone meal and 50kg of rice. On a daily basis Linda also goes through a few tins of assorted cat food and eight sachets a day for the elderly and frail cats.

The revamp team will be back at the sanctuary on Sunday, 1 February. Donations of good quality timber of any size are needed, along with nails, shade cloth and mesh.
If anyone is able to help, contact Linda on 072-752-0324.
