Revamp for cat sanctuary

4 Paws and Tale Rescue is paying it forward by helping another animal NGO.

ANIMAL welfare organisation, 4 Paws and a Tale Rescue is paying it forward by helping another NGO, Purr-fect Rescued Cats, which sees to the welfare of some 130 feral cats in the area.

Linda Weldon-Church of Athlone Park is the face behind the organisation, which has been going strong for the last 14 years. Her husband, David initially started it, but he tragically died in August, 2012.
Every day, no matter the weather, Linda feeds feral cats once a day at Dakota Beach and the Acacia Complex. “I have a few regular donors, but most of the expenses for food and other necessities come out of my own pocket,” said Linda.

Over the years, Jacqueline Smith of 4 Paws and a Tale Rescue had heard of Linda’s work. “Our shop, Tale End Charity Shop is doing well. I asked Nicky and Johnny Koekemoer of 4 Paws if they would like to get involved in another project and they agreed wholeheartedly.”

On Sunday, 25 January the Koekemoers will take a team to Purr-Fect Rescued Cats sanctuary to do general maintenance work, as well as revamp cages. If anyone is able to assist with donations of timber, nails, wire meshing, cat litter, newspapers, cat food and black bags, it would be appreciated. “I use 4kg of dry food and four tins of pilchards a day,” said Linda.

The organisation is also in need of a fridge and chest freezer. Sponsorship is also needed to sterilise some of the feral cats.
“Unfortunately, we can’t invite the public to help with the revamp because of space constraints,” said Jacqueline.

Linda’s work not only involves feeding cats, but also birds and monkeys in the area. To raise funds, she has a stall at the Essenwood market, every Saturday, from 8am to 2pm, where she sells bric-a-brac items. Donations of ornaments, crockery, photo frames and other items are also required.

The Army Saints have also come on board with the help of Medal Paints, as the sanctuary also needs a paint facelift.
Donations can be deposited into the Purr-fect Rescued Cats account: Standard Bank, Prospecton; account number, 251-247-848, branch code 057-827. For more information, contact Linda on 072-752-0324.
