NPO aims to develop community bonds

The organisation hopes to work as an umbrella under which the community can work together in small ways.

IT was yet another successful meeting for ‘My Sapphire CommUnity’ at Zanzibar Restaurant in Warner Beach on Thursday, 15 January.
It provided an opportunity to discuss how the organisation hopes to work as an umbrella under which the community can work together in small ways in the same direction to make a difference for all.

It recognised the great achievements of initiatives such as the Toti Crime Forum, Army Saints, FACT and many more.
The group discussed their plans to engage in forthcoming events during the year, with strong emphasis on supporting local business.

The plan is to develop community bonds to raise awareness of the ecological value of the area, so that steps can be taken to protect sites and to understand how to take advantage of the tourist interest in the area.
Renowned underwater photographer, Allen Walker gave a presentation, showing some of his wonderful images, all taken at local beaches, including Baggies, Winkle and Umkomaas. He chatted about eco-tourism, and specifically the range of wildlife on the KZN coast. Divers, surfers and spear fishermen, whale watchers and marine enthusiasts come from around the world to enjoy the unique variety of wildlife here.

Aliwal Shoal has recently been named as a ‘Hope Spot’ and it is an exciting opportunity to showcase the KZN coast to the world.
A recently organised full moon walk was hailed a success. It is something that people can enjoy on a regular basis. The next full moon walk is on Wednesday, 4 February at 6.30pm from Baggies to Winkle and back. Everyone is invited to join in.

The next community meeting will be on Thursday, 19 February at 5pm for 5.30pm at a location to be agreed on. Keep an eye on the Facebook page for details.
