THE South African National Blood Service (SANBS) showed a significant increase in blood stocks over the festive season, traditionally a difficult time.
SANBS got through this period without a shortage and thank donors for their support.

However, there has been a massive decline in donations in January. This has resulted in stock levels dropping to two-and-a-half days, significantly lower than the five-day blood stock that is needed to meet the demand in the country.

Instead of giving up something up this year, the SANBS is asking people to give blood. Donating blood saves lives. It’s an easy resolution to keep and it is easy to get started.
Each day, 3,000 units of blood must be collected to supply the hospitals in South Africa. The need for blood is on-going, every 35 seconds someone needs a blood transfusion.

“There are many people who haven’t donated before, or haven’t done so for a while, and we are asking them to come forward and donate blood regularly. Your blood saves lives,” said regional marketing manager, Sifiso Khoza.

In order to recognise the tremendous efforts of committed donors, SANBS will be giving away a special edition sports bag to donors who make four blood donations during the year.
To become a blood donor you must be between the ages of 16 and 65-years-old; weigh more than 50kg; lead a sexually safe lifestyle; be healthy on the day of the donation and eat a good meal before giving blood.
