Lions hand over creche to informal settlement

The area, which boasts in excess of 600 shacks, had no creche.

“We can all be proud today as this is a very special day, opening Lindokuhle Creche.”

Those were delighted words of eThekwini South Lions president, Margaret Haus in addressing the Dakota Beach informal settlement community and various sponsors at the hand-over of the creche on Thursday morning, 22 January.

The area, which boasts in excess of 600 shacks, had no creche and mothers had to leave their toddlers at home alone while they went to work. Often older children could not go to school as they are tasked with looking after their younger siblings. Where there were no older siblings, one guardian routinely checked up on the toddlers or babies left in the shacks.

This was a dire situation, compounded by the possibility of shack fires.

The creche is named Lindokuhle, after a seven-year-old boy who died in one such fire.

“We decided this was a project we would like to take on,” said Margaret.

PR councillor for Isipingo, Jaco Pienaar got Conlog in Durban to donate two 12-metre long refurbished shipping containers and the Lions set about beautifying and furnishing them, with donations from business and the public.

“Today we are opening this creche for the children of Dakota Beach to know there is a place where youngsters can be safe while their parents are at work,” said Margaret.

“People of Dakota Beach, this is your creche. Be proud of it, look after it and remember the security and education of your children should be taken seriously.”

The Lions thank Isipingo PR councillor, Jaco Pienaar. Conlog for the two shipping containers, roof and electrical wiring. WK Construction for supplying material and labour to construct the platform for the containers and the floor slab. Jarefs Paint and DIY Centre for paint and stationery. Netcare for furniture. The Lions Club of Durban Host for educational toys, small tables and chairs, mugs and plates. Mott Mac Donald staff for educational toys, kitchenware, stationary, a stove and clothing. Nico le Roux for the creche sign and Oscar Myaka for assistance.
