Watch towers to keep beaches safe

The watch towers will be manned all day by private guards who will be in radio contact with ET Security.

Community-funded watch towers have been erected at Baggies, Elcock and Winkle beaches.

The towers, which will be operational from Saturday, 20 December to 5 January, were sponsored by ET Security in conjunction with M-Projects, and backed by the security company’s armed response, the Community Crime Prevention Organisation and Metro Police’s dog unit.

The watch towers will be manned all day by private guards who will be in radio contact with ET Security.

Shaun Callaghan and his Army Saints will patrol the beaches from Winkle to Pipeline, handing out pamphlets and educating visitors about Toti being a firework-free zone.

“This is the public getting involved and making a difference by putting extra security on our beaches, above what Metro Police and Toti SAPS do,” said Sapphire Coast Toti Tourism (SCTT) chairman, Jacques van Schalkwyk. “It is awesome to see.”

Toti Crime Forum raised the funds through donations and sponsorship from local business owners and residents. “This project is specifically for December, so that everyone can benefit and feel safe when they visit our beaches,” said Lee Lewis of Toti Crime Forum.
