Lifesavers work to curb drownings

Holidaymakers are reminded to follow beach and water safety tips.

LIFESAVING KZN South, which highlights voluntary work done by members of affiliated clubs of the association between Amanzimtoti and Port Edward, has compiled safety tips for beachgoers this festive season.

“Beaches are patrolled by voluntary lifeguards on Sundays and public holidays and the rest of the week by lifeguards from the various municipalities. Seasonal lifeguards are drawn from the voluntary clubs. Lifeguards ensure the safety of the bathing public in patrolled areas by promoting the prevention of drowning,” said PRO, Henk Lotz.

As tourism is the lifeblood of most towns along the South Coast, Lifesaving KZN South reminds holidaymakers of the following beach and water safety tips:

*Always swim between the red and yellow flags.

* Never swim alone or in an area not patrolled by lifeguards.

* Obey warning signs and lifeguard instructions – they are there to protect you.

* If in difficulty, raise a hand above your head. Do not panic and conserve your energy. Help will arrive.

* Understand and avoid rip currents and dangerous areas. If in doubt ask a lifeguard and respect the water and the environment.

* Take precautions from the heat and sun, protect your skin. Always use a sunscreen of at least 15+ and limit your exposure particularly between 10am and 4pm.

* Alcohol abuse is known to be the prime cause of drowning disasters. Swimming and alcohol do not mix.
