Frantic efforts to prepare Toti for holiday rush

Load shedding is a reality and could well be with us throughout the season, so plan accordingly.

With Toti about to enter the busy festive season and cater to thousands of holidaymakers, eThekwini Municipality and contractors are working frantically to get the town ready for what promises to be another bumper season.

“While the contract to upgrade the Kingsway road surface is set to run into 2015, contractors have been requested to prioritise the stretch between Toti River and Oppenheimer Road for improved traffic flow prior to the start of the festive season,” said ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge.

Sidewalk upgrades in Rockview Road and in front of High Tide are completed, with the contractor requested to remove rubble.

The sidewalk upgrade in Isundu Road should be completed in time. “While progress is weather permitting, contractors worked through the rain on Sunday, 30 November,” said Cllr Beetge.

The roads department will clear rubble remaining from surface repairs along Beach Road.

“The contractor has been requested to speed up laying electrical cables from Somerset Way into San Gabriel and Longacres Drive running to Kingsburgh West, as sand along the narrow roads is a point of concern.

Load shedding is a reality and could well be with us throughout the season, so plan accordingly.”

Various faulty street lights were reported during a recent inspection.

Report all electrical faults, including faulty robots to 080-131-3111.

“The wastewater department confirmed that all pump stations have been checked and a newly repaired pump has been installed at Subway Road with a standby pump in the process of being overhauled. This is to alleviate re-occurring problems at Winklespruit beach when the pumps are working at optimum capacity.

All functionality of pumps are reliant on the public refraining from introducing foreign objects such as clothing, towels or plastic into the system.”

Report faulty pump stations, wastewater blockages and spills to 080-131-3013.

“Contractors have been deployed along all main arterial routes to cut back and clean verges and sidewalks. Metro Rail cut back along the gravel road leading to the Warner soccer field two weeks ago. Likewise departments are cleaning and maintaining the promenade.

Beaches will be open from 6am to 6pm. Night time swimming is not allowed. However, public toilets at some of the busy beaches will remain open to 10pm.

Additional law enforcement officers, private security personnel have been deployed to all bathing areas, plus Metro Police officers, seasonal beach cleaners and lifeguards.

Staff will handle separated children at Toti main and Umgababa beaches that includes the issue of free wrist bands. Children who are not collected by 6pm will be taken to overnight facilities in Durban.

The emergency call centre for Metro Police, law enforcement, ambulance and fire brigade is 031-361-0000.

“Additional bins have been put along all beaches and skip bins at strategic places by Durban Solid Waste to facilitate additional waste.”
