Death of Kevin Hay

He was a member at Isipingo Angling Club, Isipingo Ski-Boat Club, Warnadoone Lifesaving Club and Warnadoone Ski-Boat Club.

Toti fisherman, Kevin Hay (47) lost his battle against pancreatic cancer on Friday, 14 November.

Kevin was born in Montclair, but moved to Toti and Warner Beach and matriculated at Amanzimtoti High School.

He was a member at Isipingo Angling Club, Isipingo Ski-Boat Club, Warnadoone Lifesaving Club and Warnadoone Ski-Boat Club.

After their friend was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Toti paddlers, Ross Fountain and Brett Hadiaris started Team Flamingo to raise funds for him and to raise awareness of cancer.

The challenge quickly grew into a community drive, testament to Kevin’s high regard in Toti circles.

Sporting bright pink attire, Ross and Brett, along with Brett’s wife Nicole, swam the Midmar Mile and the pair paddled this year’s Dusi Canoe Marathon, while Gary Albers and Lyle Whitehead paddled the conventional three-day Dusi in one day and a large group tackled the Richmond Mudman to fly the ‘Team Flamingo’ flag.

The Winkle Fishing Ski Club and Warnadoone Ski-Boat Club hosted fishing competitions and Warner Beach fishermen, Dave Murgatroyd, Kenny Moore, Greg Thompson and George Murgatroyd donated their prize money to the cause after winning a Cape Vidal fishing competition, and Jan ‘couta’ Coetzee organised an auction to boost the donation.

Team Flamingo even went international with ex-Warner Beach residents and friends doing the Stadium to Sea 10km walk in New Zealand, as well as lighting up the Electric Run in London.

“Kevin was a great friend with impeccable integrity,” said Ross. “He treated everyone he knew like family and always offered to help out where he could. I have no doubt in my mind that his legacy will live on for generations, even if in the form of a flamingo. It was a privilege to have known him.”

Kevin is survived by his wife, Lisa, children Jamie-Lee and Jessica and grandson Brody Ashton Smart.
