God’s ‘Little’ Creatures – the Cape Dwarf Gecko

Because of their small size these geckos can only eat very small insects such as ants.

Today I want to talk about the Cape Dwarf Gecko:

This is a common gecko on the Bluff and even most parts of Durban and beyond. These little Gecko’s only grow to a maximum body length of 4cm, then they have a tail of about 3cm. These geckos are quite drab in colouraton and may often be missed by most peope because of there amazing camouflage. Only the tail can sometimes have a slight orange tint in it.

Like most other geckos, these little guys lay eggs, but only two small eggs are laid at a time. Because of their small size these geckos can only eat very small insects such as ants. So this makes this little gecko very useful to keep around, specially on the ant infested Bluff.

They usually blend right into their surroundings. They choose to live on tree trunks, and on plain cement walls. Unlike the common house Geckos, these little guys are out and about in daylight and enjoy basking in the sun. So the next time you are in your garden, go look for a sunny spot on a tree trunk or your outside wall and see if you can see one.
