Green champion school lauded by Wessa

The competition was run by the WESSA Treasure Beach Centre in association with the WESSA Umbogavango Centre.

The WESSA Umbogavango Centre, together with the WESSA Treasure Beach Environmental Education Centre, congratulate Amanzimtoti Primary School on being ‘green champions’ and winning the ‘Green school, green environment, green life’ competition.

The competition was run by the WESSA Treasure Beach Centre in association with the WESSA Umbogavango Centre through generous funding support from the AECI Corporate Social Investment (CSI) Trust.

“The ‘Green School, Green Environment, Green Life’ competition was introduced for schools to take action for a healthier environment,” said Tatum van Soelen of the WESSA Treasure Beach Environmental Education Centre.

“In total 10 schools in the vicinity of the WESSA Umbogavango Centre were invited to participate.

The schools were required to investigate a local environmental issue, implement an action project to address the issue, then submit a ‘story of change’, reporting on how they created a healthier environment.”

According to Tatum, Amanzimtoti Primary School were the deserved winners. They submitted two projects, ‘Treely Green’ – a tree planting project – and ‘Veggie Greens’ – a permaculture food gardening project.

The winning prize was a trip to the WESSA Treasure Beach Centre for a rocky shore excursion.

“On Thursday, 6 November, 10 excited pupils and teachers explored Treasure Beach, learning about the ecosystem and discovering wondrous creatures such as sea anemones, sea urchins and star fish.

Congratulations to Amanzimtoti Primary School for helping to create a healthier environment,” said Tatum.
