City must do more to curb extortion

It appears that this practice is widespread.

EDITOR – Following on from my letter last week concerning the extortion of additional payments for water connections, I have learned that a similar situation occurs with the installation of electricity meters.

Our gardener was conned into paying an additional R250 when his electricity meter was installed, and unfortunately on that occasion, he had money available.

It appears that this practice is widespread. We can educate people as far as possible, but surely Ethekweni Municipality should be doing something with prominent notices at the payment centres, and a warning on the receipts when connection fees are paid?
