Car guards help police cuff fatal Beach Rd mugger

Njabulo Khanyase was arrested after he was spotted by car guards walking along Beach Road.

The mugger allegedly responsible for the attack which led to a holidaymaker’s death on Toti promenade on 9 September, has been arrested by Toti SAPS.

Andries Lombard (64) was cut multiple times while being mugged on his way to Toti Mall.

The thief fled with his watch and wallet.

Witnesses chased after the mugger on the promenade towards Toti Lagoon, but unfortunately lost him.

Andries, who was visiting relatives in Toti from Helikon Park in Randfontein with his wife Toy, tried to make his way back to Montrose flats where he was staying, but he collapsed and died from his injuries in the car park.

Njabulo Khanyase (21) was arrested on Friday, 17 October after he was spotted by car guards walking along Beach Road.

“The car guards then went to the Toti detectives’ office to alert the investigating officer,” said Toti SAPS communication officer, Captain Charlene van der Spuy.

“Armed with the man’s description, investigating officer, D/Cst P Dunn, with the assistance of her colleagues, W/O TC Nyawose, W/O AS Hlubi and Cst SP Mbongwe went in search of him.

He tried fleeing, but was collared by another car guard, which resulted in his arrest.”

Khanyase appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 20 October on a charge of murder. The case was postponed for further investigation and he remains in custody.

“Toti SAPS thanks the car guards involved for their quick response and assistance,” said Capt Van Der Spuy.
