TOTI Magistrate’s Court rang out with beautiful singing voices on Friday morning, 19 September, as four staff members ‘took to stage’ in court.
The four women were dressed-up in cultural attire, as the Department of Justice celebrated Heritage Day on Friday, as Wednesday, 24 September is a public holiday.
The choir was started by magistrate, Charlotte Dickinson a few years ago and comprises a security guard and two clerks employed in the court. “I decided to start my own choir, after being told I was not good enough for a local church choir,” said Charlotte.
At the end of August, the group performed at the retirement function of the chief magistrate of Durban, Mr Mabaso at Suncoast Casino. “At first, I wanted to cancel because I thought we were not good enough, as the ‘who’s, who’ of the legal fraternity would have been there. I am glad I didn’t – we had an amazing time.”
Since that performance they have been named the ‘Mabaso Choir’. They meet about twice a month and sing for about five minutes. “We make a happy noise.” The choir is Charlotte’s contribution to ‘uplifting the community, to make South Africa a better place’.
