Afriforum celebrates Arbor Day

Arbor Week is an opportunity for the public to learn about the importance of trees.

The AfriForum branch in Toti celebrated Arbor Day on Tuesday, 2 September, by planting 20 fruit trees at Kuswag Skool.

According to provincial co-ordinator for AfriForum, Chris Fourie, the annual Arbor Week is an opportunity for the public to learn about the importance of trees.

“It is also when we get inspired to plant indigenous trees as a practical and symbolical gesture of sustainable environmental management.

This Arbor week AfriForum will mobilise communities all over South Africa and create practical realities on grass roots level to drive actions around the conservation of trees. We strive to conserve nature and to educate the public. Arbor Day is a day of hope. Trees are our heritage and it serves as an important link in the ecosystem, and is a natural resource which we can’t exist without. It provides oxygen, shade and food,” said Chris.

Teachers and pupil from the high school were address by AfriForum’s head of environmental affairs, Julius Kleynhans on the importance of trees and how the community can learn from trees. They then all joined the local committee in planting the trees.
