City calls for support of clean-up, Arbor Week

Get involved and help the environment.

ETHEKWINI Municipality is calling all residents to join in with its city-wide cleaning and tree planting campaign to celebrate Clean-up SA Month and National Arbor Week.

“Let us plant more trees and clean our environment to maintain a green and beautiful city,” was the message of Durban mayor, Cllr James Nxumalo and the municipal management team at the launch of the two remembrances.

Monday to Sunday, 1 to 7 September is National Arbor Week, in which many South Africans play their part by planting a tree. The mayor has called on all residents to preserve the environment. “As a municipality, we pride ourselves on the major strides we have taken in pushing this agenda of environmental awareness and nature conservation, and as proof of our commitment, last year we planted over 13,000 indigenous trees and 3,918 exotic trees in many parts of our city.”

People may visit their nearest Parks, Leisure and Cemeteries Department to get seedlings, free of charge, so they can get invovled.

September is Clean-up SA Month, with the highlight being the annual International Coastal Clean-up on Saturday, 20 September. With this in mind, the municipality has embarked on a one-month cleaning campaign, which sees them in Wentworth on Wednesday, 9 for a clean-up at the Highbury Sports grounds in Tara Road, along with other visits to South Durban throughout the month.

The verge competition, which began two years ago, is another way for residents to make their city beautiful. Praise-worthy verges can be nominated for the title of best verge by sending a photo of the verge to 083-288-8790, emailing it to charles.ambrose@durban.gov.za or hand-deliver it to the Parks, Leisure and Cemeteries Department office, 70 St Thomas Road, Durban (Botanic Gardens).

The address, name and contact details of the resident (where possible), and what type of property it is should be included with the photo. Closing date for the submissions is Tuesday, 30 September.
