Toti lagoon fish battle sewage

A Toti resident said he had seen a tanker dumping sewage in the lagoon.

Hundreds of fish, including guppies, were swimming with their mouths out of the water, gasping for air in the Toti Lagoon on Friday morning, 29 August.

Already there are at least a dozen dead fish in the water, due to a recent sewage spill. Unless something urgently is done, there will be a major fish kill by the end of the weekend.

The situation was brought to the Sun’s attention by owner of On The Beach Holiday Letting, Rentia Murray, whose busineses are situated on the lagoon’s edge.

“This is unacceptable, I can’t take it,” she said. “It’s so frustrating to see the fish like this.”

Rentia said the smell of sewage was “terrible” on Thursday, 28 August.

A Toti resident told her he had seen a tanker dumping sewage in the lagoon.

The Sun reported the situation to eThekwini Municipality, Toti Conservancy and Afriforum, and is awaiting further action.
