Death of beach kiosk’s Jannie

His son described him as cheeky and lovable.

FAMILY and friends are mourning the death of Johannes Hendrik Strydom, affectionately known as Jannie, the owner of the kiosk at Baggies Beach on Thursday, 21 August.
Jannie (59) was admitted to Addington Hospital, after he had shown signs of having suffered a stroke the previous weekend.

His son, Jannie said he was well-known in the community, having run the kiosk for some 15 years and also having sponsored various surfing events also at Baggies.
“My dad was cheeky and lovable. He looked like a big, grizzly bear, but was a teddy bear at heart.” He described him as proper gentleman, who was friendly and genuine and who everyone could count on.

Jannie senior was born in Durban, at Addington Hospital. He completed his schooling at King Edward High School and was a keen sportsman, having represented the school in rugby. He lived in Johannesburg for a number of years, before relocating to Warner Beach some 21 years ago.

Sadly, Jannie lost his first wife, Ruby Eileen in 2012, after 30 years of marriage, while he was in hospital recovering from a bypass. While on the road to recovery, he met Carol and they were married in February.
He is survived by his wife Carol, seven children, seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

A memorial service was held at St Winifreds Methodist Church on Tuesday, 26 August.
The Baggies kiosk will continue to operate as usual.
