Bikers come under threat

A KUSWAG Skool pupil was critically injured on Tuesday, 4 August in one of an ever-increasing number of recent motorbike accidents locally.

The 17-year-old girl was thrown from her scooter in a crash with a car at the intersection of Blaze Way and Umdoni Road at about 4pm.

 
The teen was stabilised and placed on a ventilator by responding Netcare 911 paramedics, whose advanced life support paramedic accompanied and admitted her to St Augustine’s Hospital, where she is being sedated.

 
“I’m heartbroken about the many pupils who have been injured on motorcycles and for those pupils we have lost. My staff, pupils and I are heartbroken at this news. We are all praying for her,” said Kuswag Skool principal, Linda Scholtz.

 
Another bike accident this week saw a young man seriously hurt after his motorbike collided with a car at the Kingsway-Link Road junction on Tuesday evening, 5 August. The biker was travelling south on Kingsway when a vehicle out of Link Road collided with the bike. Netcare 911 paramedics treated the man for serious injuries before hospitalising him.

 
There have been at least five bike-related crashes in less than a month in Toti.

 
Keela Wherle (26) is recovering in hospital after he was hit by a car on the R603 in Winklespruit on Sunday morning, 27 July. He was unable to avoid a car that turned in front of him. The bone below his knee shattered and required surgery.

 
A woman biker was hospitalised for injuries she sustained in a collision with a car on Kingsway opposite Sher-Jo’s Restaurant during rush hour on Monday morning, 21 July.

 
On Tuesday, 16 July, a biker was seriously injured after he was hit by a vehicle on Beach Road. The biker was T-boned by a vehicle that sped away without stopping. He sustained serious injuries to his lower limbs.
