Fishing fundraisers hook aid for little fighters

It is the biggest annual children's fishing competition in the country.

The Toti fishing community dipped into their pockets to raise much-needed funds for two little girls battling illness.

Linda Els of High Tide Fishing, Tackle and Bait in Warner Beach auctioned off an Angling Times shirt at a junior fishing bonanza competition held on 12 July.

Featuring 140 entrants this year, it is the biggest annual children’s fishing competition in the country and each year Linda donates funds to a worthy cause.

“This year we also collected donations at the prizegiving and I decided to donate the money raised to Emma de Vries, Faron-Mae Fisher and the Little Fighters Cancer Trust,” she said.

Faron-Mae is a three-year-old Toti girl who was diagnosed with an extremely rare genetic disease, GSD type 0 (glycogen storage disease) in 2012. She is the only known baby in South Africa with this condition, and one of 1,000 worldwide.

“A big thank you to Linda for raising this money for Faron-Mae,” said Faron-Mae’s mother, Paula.

“The Toti community is absolutely amazing and so supportive of our little girl. Thank you Linda, you have helped make a big difference in a very special little girl’s life.”Emma is an 18-month-old baby fighting cancer. She is in week six of chemotherapy treatment.

“No words can describe the gratitude we feel towards Linda and the fishing community for their help,” said Emma’s mother, Tanya. “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.”
