Ward councillor reports on council projects

Here is the latest council news from the desk of ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge.

The 50-kilolitre water tank that serves Athlone Park with a 19-metre elevation is unable to supply the current required 2.5-bar water pressure for the area. In addition, the structure shows signs of structural deterioration with numerous visible cracks and corrosion on exposed steel reinforcement.

Recommendations have been made to provide R6,9-m in the 2015/16 budget to construct a new 25-metre tower with an increased capacity of 100-kilolitre to serve the ever-increasing demand of the Athlone Park area.

“Once the new tower is complete, the existing structure will be demolished,” said Cllr Beetge.

To improve quality and reliability in the Kingsburgh area, the existing high voltage supply from the Doonside substation will be decommissioned and 25,000 metres of medium voltage cables at a cost of R19,4-m installed.

“Work has already commenced that accounts for trenches and piping along Somerset Way between Doonside and Warner Beach.

Never safe from crime, the trenching afforded cable thieves easier access, with the result that the functionality of robots at intersections are affected. The problem has been elevated to eThekwini Transport Authority (ETA). Signals should soon be operational along with additional security to alleviate repeated cable theft.”

Residents are requested to exercise patience while the project is being implemented.

Subject to approval from only one more department, the road surface of Kingsway that runs from the Joyner Road intersection (ward 90), through Athlone Park (ward 93) into Toti (ward 97) and ending towards Leslie Road in Doonside will soon be receiving necessary and overdue attention.

“The project will be done in phases over a 10-month period that will vary from resurfacing to lifting the existing the road surface and replacing it with an entire new top,” said Cllr Beetge.

Residents are requested to observe various notices that will be brought to their attention in local media as well as roadside boards to alert if and when a specific area will be tackled.

Following residential enquiries, the parks department has started clearing alien invaders from the area along the railway line between the R603 intersection and the Gordon/Auracaria intersection last week.

“This is a continuation of the project we initiated two years ago in front of the licensing department, where alien vegetation was removed as it harboured prostitution and substance abuse.

The area has since been transformed into a park – the current project renders itself to similar possibilities.”

The newly constructed additional informal trader shelters, storage facility and ablutions in Rogies Park are complete and were officially handed over to the traders by eThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo during a ceremony that coincided with Mandela Day on Friday, 18 July.

“Law enforcement will act against traders who continue to use sidewalks to trade instead of using the structures erected for this purpose,” said Cllr Beetge.
