Rotten cops to remain on the beat

The DA will write to the Minister of Police, Nathi Nhleko requesting that he instruct the National Police Commissioner, Riah Phiyega, to lawfully re-instate the Fitness Boards of Inquiry into the 1,448 members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) who have been convicted of criminal offences.

Tuesday, a reply to a DA parliamentary question revealed that 1,064 of the 1,448 members who appeared before the boards will not reappear. Furthermore, the remaining 317 members have yet to appear at all, given the decision in the matter of POPCRU obo Ngewekazi and the Minister of Police.

Of even greater concern is the revelation by the minister that none of these members have been dismissed so far.

“With these boards of inquiry now nul and void, given Phiyega’s disastrous handling of this matter, and no clear plan to re-establish them, these 1,448 cops will remain on the beat,” said Shadow Minister of Police, MP Dianne Kohler Barnard on the DA’s website.

“This is simply unacceptable, especially if one considers the crimes that they have been convicted of.”
