Budding chefs learn from accomplished cook

Doreen Goldschagg is co-ordinating a cookery course at Toti Child Welfare.

ACCOMPLISHED cook, Doreen Goldschagg (76) is passing on her knowledge to budding chefs at cookery courses conducted at Amanzimtoti Child and Family Welfare Society.

When she heard about the course from the society’s treasurer, she saw it is an opportunity to help others.

The project is funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, which has acquired sufficient funding for a year. The course has been well received by the public and a third lot of cooks will graduate next week.

The participants are taught basic cooking and baking skills. “Among the dishes they are taught to make are bread and cakes, pot roast and fish cakes. They are also taught how to set a table and dining etiquette,” said Doreen.

She has been cooking from a young age and was taught the basics by her mother and a teacher at school. “I am a hands-on person, I was able to watch and learn. As I am a people’s person, I want to pass on my knowledge to others, so that they can better themselves.”

Doreen is also involved in three women’s institutes in the area, Warner Beach, Kingfisher and Twini Evening. She is also the homemaking convenor of the Federation of Women’s Institutes, where she is involved in providing reports to congress and setting competitions.

Doreen has been living in the area since 1970. She has two children and is a grandmother of one.

If anyone wants to participate in the course, contact the welfare office on 031-903-5171. There is no cost.
