A police officer was shot dead while committing a robbery in the Umzinto area on Friday, 4 July.
“During the robbery it is alleged there was a shootout between the robbers and the victim,” said Captain Thulani Zwane of the KZN SAPS media centre. “A man who was later identified as a police officer from Umlazi Tactical Response team, was shot and killed while a second man was wounded and taken to hospital under police guard.
Three other suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash in their two getaway vehicles, a Toyota Corolla and Isuzu bakkie.”
Umzinto police opened a case of business robbery, an inquest and attempted murder docket for further investigation.
A 9mm pistol belonging to the deceased was found at the scene. It will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if it was used in any other crimes in the province.
