Worker critical after being shot in Jacobs

The shooting took place while the man (48) was walking to his workplace at Defy in Teakwood Road.

A WORKER in the manufacturing sector was critically injured by a shot in the back while walking to work in Jacobs at about 5.30am today, Friday, 4 July, in one of two incidents that took place within half an hour and which police believe are linked to the national NUMSA-strike.

The shooting took place while the man (48) was walking to his workplace at Defy in Teakwood Road. He was walking under the Jacobs bridge when he was shot in the back. Ambulance services were called and rushed him to King Edward VIII Hospital.
The man’s shooting followed an earlier incident in which shots were discharged into a bakkie entering Defy’s nearby premises at 5.10am.

In the earlier shooting, another Defy employee, aged 38, was driving through gate five of the same appliance manufacturer’s premises when he was approached by an armed man who fired four shots in his direction. While one of the shots hit the left front door panel near the passenger’s seat, the driver and his passenger were uninjured. The driver spun off into the premises for his safety and CCTV footage revealed the shooter was joined by two other men who left on foot in a north easterly direction.

Bluff police are searching for the shooter, who witnesses said was wearing a white sports jacket with a horizontal, dark-green stripe trim with an insignia in the chest area, which matches a description provided by the victim in the earlier shooting at the gate.
