Unemployed help clean Toti for clothes

Unemployed have opportunity to pick up litter to earn a pack of second-hand clothes.

The revitalised spirit to clean up Toti will receive a major boost through another initiative from the founder of Army Saints, Shaun Callaghan.

The Saints are an army of volunteers and companies that help out charities and organisations in need of aid.

The service for supplies initiative offers the unemployed an opportunity to pick up litter to earn a pack of second-hand clothes.

“We basically need three fundamentals – clothes, shelter and food,” said Shaun.

The clothes are donated and Shaun packs them. A worker then has a choice of which pack they would prefer, they receive black bags from Shaun in the morning and spend the day collecting litter from a designated area.

Currently three workers are ’employed’ by Shaun in the vicinity of Toti Lagoon and one in Adams Road.

The idea has evolved from offering clothes to unemployed people to help pull out water hyacinth from the lagoon.

“Now that the majority of hyacinth has been removed, the initiative has been extended to litter.”

Shaun would like to see businesses and individuals buy into the concept.

“Employ a worker to clean your area and in turn offer them second-hand clothing, food or money. If every household or business did this, imagine what Toti would look like.”

People willing to donate second-hand clothing or shoes in good condition, can contact Shaun on 084-516-7463.
