Saints’ river crews buoyed by support

The Toti River is now clean up to about 150 metres upriver.

The Army Saints were back in action at the weekend and cleaned 100 metres up the Toti River behind Toti Rugby Club and the whole length of the Little Amanzimtoti River along the beach by Warner Beach Lifesaving Club.

The Toti River is now clean up to about 150 metres upriver.

“We are so amazed by the support we get and our numbers seem to rise all the time,” said Sgt Justine Purcell.

“What an amazing weekend. Both the Toti and Little Amanzimtoti rivers were attended to and a lot of work was done.

A big shout out to Jeff van Belkum, Peter Retallick, William Harris and the rest of the crew who cleaned out the little Toti River.

Also to Debonairs Toti for bringing us 40 pizzas and cooldrinks for lunch. What an amazing contribution. They donated these pizzas of their own free will.

We are all so glad that local businesses are taking note and supporting our work.”

After most of the hyacinth and water lettuce has been removed from both rivers, Mark Pontes and members of Toti Canoe Club will routinely spray midstream on top of the plants as they pop up to kill off the remaining ones. This spray will not affect any other plant life nor the river water.

The Saints will be back in action this weekend. Meet at the squash courts at 10am.

Discussions about restoring the bird park to its former glory have already begun and the Saints continue to support Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife with its renovations.

“We never focus on one project at a time,” said Justine. “There are many going on in the background all the time.”
