LARGE parts of Athlone Park – including Kingsway Hospital – are without telephone lines and internet, after copper cable thieves struck today.

Hospital manager Annatjie Demetriou told media this afternoon that the lines have been down from around noon today.

The hospital’s access to the internet and emails has been affected and patient applications are being recorded manually. “We have an electronic system for admissions. However, we are doing it manually at the moment. It is not affecting any of the services at the moment in our hospital.

“What they have informed us about was that they have discovered that the cables have been stolen. So they are doing their utmost best to rectify the problem. They could not tell us when or how quick this is going to happen,” she said.

Demetriou said a technician who assessed the lines informed the hospital the outage was caused by cable theft in the Isipingo area.

The hospital can be contacted via its 24-hour cell-phone number- 071 579 5714.
