A family member who raped a nine-year-old girl on three different occasions was convicted of rape and sentenced to life imprisonment on Tuesday, 17 June.
The 28-year-old perpetrator is the victim’s father’s cousin, whom she looked up to as a father figure. He lived in the same house as the victim.
On three occasions in 2012, when only the two of them were at home at Amahlongwa Mission, near Umkomaas, he called her to his room and raped her.
A case of rape was registered by Umkomaas SAPS and the docket was assigned to D/S Vuyo Mahlikihla of the Umlazi Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for investigation.
The man was arrested and charged with rape. He appeared in the Scottburgh Regional Court.
“Such convictions and sentences bear testimony to the fact that sexual offenders will be traced, arrested and successfully prosecuted,” said KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
