Parenting course breeds positive outcomes

Various topics were discussed over a nine-week period.

KINGSBURGH Child and Family Society hosted a successful nine-week positive parenting programme funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.

Seven women from the community started the course on 1 May, which concluded on Tuesday, 10 June, where certificates were handed to them at a graduation.

The course focused on parents and people working with children within the context of families. “The course aims to teach parenting skills that are not inborn, but acquired through experience and learning,” said Sandra Govender, senior social worker at welfare.

Some of the topics discussed over the weeks touched on understanding behaviour; listening to children’s feelings; responding to children’s negative feelings; building children’s self-esteem; expressing parental needs and feelings; discipline and being assertive; discipline and problem-solving.

“The programme was informative and gave me hands-on knowledge on how to interact with children. It also gave me info on the behaviour of children, depending on their position in the family, whether they are the first-born, middle child and so on ,”said Lorraine Manyoni.
