New retirement home for Doonside

The 031 Senior Board and Lodging will accommodate 90 residents.

Toti will soon boast a new retirement home.

Aengus Properties has bought and renovated the Sunset Lodge Salvation Army property in Doonside.

“We started revamping in January,” said project manager, Pieter Venter, an ex-Toti resident and Kuswag old boy, who is now based in Johannesburg. “We tried to recycle as much as possible.”

The 031 Senior Board and Lodging will accommodate 90 residents from 50 to 80-years-old and cater for the average income person. Residents will have a choice of two, three or four sleeper rooms. “It’s a communal facility, but respecting a person’s privacy.

The home will not offer frail care, but will employ a full-time nurse and caregivers for residents who need extra care, and is wheelchair-friendly.

It will also boast a kitchen with three meals a day in two dining halls, a laundry and a full-time cleaning crew.

More than 30 jobs will be created, directly and indirectly, with the opening of the home on 1 July.

Residents will be able to participate in pilates classes, light aerobic workouts, enjoy bingo evenings or relax in an entertainment lounge. The home will also offer transport and a driver for shopping and hospital trips and recreational outings.

“The emphasis is on people to come here and have fun,” said Pieter.
